What is a K10 "depression test" and how can it help?

If you’ve ever conducted online research about depression or anxiety chances are you’ve come across a mental health test or so-called depression quiz.

Many pages available to the public that claim to be a “depression test” are helpful and useful. Indeed, Google does its best to filter non-reputable websites. However, as with so many things on the internet, caution is always urged if you’re engaging in any medical or psychological self-assessment relating to your mental health.

What is a K10 depression test?

Think of a Kessler K10 test as a professional depression quiz. It is a self-administered test intended to help you decide whether you should seek help or treatment for depression and anxiety. It is known for its accuracy and effectiveness and is widely used by health professionals to help assess people who may have anxiety or depression.


How does a K10 work?

A K10 assessment is a simple questionnaire based on 10 points. Each question asks you to rate, on a scale of one to five, an aspect of your recent wellbeing. The test takes just a few minutes to complete.

The K10 depression and anxiety test then tallies your results and provides you with a score. This number represents what is known as psychological distress, a general term used by medical and mental health professionals to describe negative feelings, thoughts and emotions that affect your ability to function on a day-to-date basis.

A K10 mental health test rates your psychological distress from a scale of 10 (Low) to 50 (high). The range represents how likely it is that you may experiencing anxiety or depression. Depending on your result, the test then recommends what to do next.

For example, a score of 12 (Low) means you’re unlikely to be experiencing psychological distress and you probably do not need to take further action.
